State Fund’s mission is to help California’s employers make California workplaces safer for all employees – not just those covered by our policies.

I’m very pleased to announce that Len Welsh has joined State Fund to help us do just that as the Chief of Workplace Safety.

During his tenure with Cal-OSHA and Department of Industrial Relations, Len partnered with industry and labor organizations to make workplaces safer. Under his leadership, California pioneered the nation’s first heat illness prevention standard in 2005, implementing a multi-faceted program that included partnering with major industry organizations to train and educate workers and supervisors and comprehensive outreach strategies to educate the public.

One of the things that distinguishes Len as a pioneer is the way he’s consistently worked to develop standards and practices to address new and evolving workplace safety issues, from developing the nation’s first needlestick protection program in 1998 during the height of the AIDs crisis to achieving the nation’s only Exposure Control Standard for the artificial butter flavor Diacetyl in 2010.

At State Fund Len will play an important role in helping us serve California employers and workers – not just providing guidance on how to make workplaces safer, but also showing how to understand and comply with the various rules and regulations that govern workplace safety.

We’re very glad to have him on our team.
